If your child has SEND and you’re trying to get your head around home-to-school transport in Haringey, there’s a free session coming up that’s worth knowing about.
On Friday 8 May, Chris Beckwith and colleagues from Haringey Council’s Travel Assistance team are running a two-hour parent information session at Chestnuts Community Centre in North London. It’s open to parents and carers of primary and secondary school-age children with additional needs who may need transport support. No specialist knowledge required – the team is there to explain how the system works and answer questions directly.
What the Session Covers
The session runs through four main areas that come up regularly for SEND families dealing with home-school transport:
Preparation for September 2026
If your child’s transport arrangements will change when the new academic year starts in September 2026, this part of the session is particularly useful. The team will walk through what families should be doing now and what to expect from the process.
Personal Travel Budgets (PTBs)
Personal Travel Budgets are an alternative to council-arranged transport – essentially a direct payment that families can use to organise travel themselves. The session will cover how PTBs work, who’s eligible, and what you’re allowed to spend the budget on. For some families this can offer more flexibility than the standard transport offer, so it’s worth understanding how it works even if you haven’t considered it before.
Preparation for Adulthood – Pick-Up Points and Travel Training Plans
For older young people who are moving toward greater independence, the session will look at travel training and what that involves in practise. This includes pick-up point arrangements and what a travel training plan actually covers – questions that tend to come up a lot as young people transition toward post-16 education and adulthood.
Travel Assistance Policy Changes
Haringey has updated its Travel Assistance Policy, and this part of the session covers what’s changed and how those changes might affect existing transport arrangements. If you’re unsure whether your child still meets the eligibility criteria under the new policy, this is the place to ask.
When and Where
The in-person session takes place on
- Friday 8 May, 12pm–2pm at:
- Chestnuts Community Centre 280 Saint Ann’s Road London N15 5BN
SEND Power in Haringey members who attend in person will receive a voucher as a thank-you for coming along.
Online Option Available
Not everyone can make a lunchtime session – work, school runs, caring responsibilities. The same session is being repeated online later in the evening on the same date, so there’s a second chance to attend if the in-person slot doesn’t work.
How to Register
Tickets are free and available through Eventbrite. If you have questions before the session, contact SEND Power in Haringey at hello@sendpowerinharingey.org.
