What the Session Is About

On Tuesday 28 April 2026, Haringey Council is running a free community session at Chestnuts Community Centre in Tottenham, focused on using visuals to support Autistic young people at home and out in the community.

Visual supports – picture schedules, visual timetables, choice boards, communication aids – give Autistic young people a clearer picture of what is happening around them. They can help with transitions, reduce anxiety around routine changes, and make everyday situations feel more manageable. The session is a chance to look at what these tools actually look like in practise and think about what might work for your child specifically.

Who Is It For?

The event is for parents and carers of Autistic young people currently attending schools or colleges in Haringey. You do not need to have any prior experience with visual supports to attend. The session is not a formal training – it is a community space, so whether you have been using visuals for years or are only just starting to explore them, there is something useful here.

What Happens on the Day?

The two-hour session runs from 10am to 12pm and includes time with both families and practitioners. You will have the chance to hear how other parents are using visuals day-to-day, share your own experiences if you want to, and think through what kinds of support might make a difference for your child at home and when you are out.

It is the kind of event where the conversation between parents often turns out to be as useful as anything else. People who are actually living this – working out how to support an Autistic young person through a busy Tuesday morning or a trip to the supermarket – tend to have ideas that no workshop handout quite captures.
