Camden Council has approved a trial pedestrianisation of part of Camden High Street, aimed at creating a safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable environment for residents, visitors, and businesses.
The decision follows overwhelming public support, with over 70% of respondents backing the proposal.
The trial – set to begin later in 2025 — will remove motor traffic from Camden High Street between Parkway/Kentish Town Road and Jamestown Road/Hawley Crescent, directly outside Camden Town Underground Station. This is one of London’s busiest pedestrian areas, often seeing up to 40,000 people at peak times.
What will change during the trial
- Motor vehicles will be restricted within the designated section of Camden High Street.
- Buses will be rerouted via Kentish Town Road and Hawley Crescent before continuing north.
- Blue Badge parking will be provided on nearby side streets for accessibility.
- Jamestown Road will become one-way westbound between Camden High Street and Arlington Road.
- New Streateries (outdoor dining spaces) and loading bays will support local businesses.
- A contra-flow cycle lane will promote safe two-way cycling and more active travel
The scheme will run under an Experimental Traffic Order (ETO) for up to 18 months, allowing Camden Council to monitor the impact, collect feedback, and determine whether the pedestrianisation should become permanent.
Supporting a cultural and sustainable Camden
Alongside the street changes, the council is launching the Camden High Street Cultural Programme (2025–2026) – a year-long series of events celebrating the area’s creativity, history, and community spirit. From the Mayor’s London Air Quality Fund, the project supports Camden’s goal to become a Low Emission Neighbourhood, improving air quality and encouraging greener transport.
Why this matters for local transport and SEND travel
For private hire and SEND transport providers, it’s essential to note the temporary access restrictions and plan alternative pick-up and drop-off routes around the pedestrian zone. Nearby side streets and adjusted loading areas will provide limited access, so operators should review council updates and ensure timely route planning to avoid delays or confusion.
