What Are Camden’s New Healthy School Streets?
Camden Council has launched two new Healthy School Streets schemes, both in force since 19 January 2026. They sit under experimental traffic orders, which let the council trial road restrictions for up to 18 months before deciding whether to make them permanent. The aim is straightforward: cut down traffic right outside school gates at the times children are arriving and leaving, so walking, cycling and scooting feel safer.
Two locations are covered.
- One sits on Inverness Street, by The Cavendish School.
- The other covers Baldwin’s Gardens and Portpool Lane, near St Alban’s C of E Primary School.
Each has its own restricted hours, and each comes with a set of exemptions that matter directly to transport providers.
Inverness Street: Restrictions Near the Cavendish School
On Inverness Street, between its junctions with Gloucester Crescent and Arlington Road, motor vehicles are barred from entering or driving through during term time, Monday to Friday, from 7.45am to 8.45am and again from 3.15pm to 4.15pm. Outside those hours, and during school holidays, the street operates as normal.
Baldwin’s Gardens and Portpool Lane: Restrictions Near St Alban’s
The second scheme covers two connected streets. Baldwin’s Gardens is restricted between its junction with Gray’s Inn Road and a point near Leather Lane. Portpool Lane is restricted between its junction with Gray’s Inn Road and a point near the Bourne Estate’s gated parking area. Both apply Monday to Friday during term time, from 8.15am to 9.15am and from 3pm to 4pm.
Who Is Exempt from the Restrictions?
Both schemes use the same exemption categories, and several of them are directly relevant to families and transport operators working with SEND passengers:
- Residents of properties on the restricted stretch, and carers visiting them
- Vehicles transporting a Blue Badge holder to or from an address on the restricted street
- Vehicles transporting a disabled pupil to or from The Cavendish School or St Alban’s C of E Primary School
- Plus, Bus door-to-door and Dial-a-Ride services
- Emergency services and council-authorised vehicles
Residents and carers, along with anyone transporting a disabled pupil or Blue Badge holder, need to apply to Camden for the exemption to be granted before they can drive through during restricted hours. Driving without one during those windows risks a Penalty Charge Notice.

Camden handles both exemption applications and objections through its Transport Strategy Service.
