Camden Council has reaffirmed its commitment to Independent Travel Training (ITT) and localised support as part of its Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Strategy 2022–2027.
This strategy focuses on children and young people with SEND in Camden, aiming to help them lead happy, healthy, and independent lives while ensuring families receive the support they need.
The strategy was co-produced with children, young people, families, teachers, health professionals, and care workers, ensuring that the plan reflects the real needs of the community. From this collaboration, three key priorities have been identified to guide services over the next five years.
Camden SEND Strategy Priorities
1. Make Life Easier for Families
Camden Council aims to make families feel supported and included by:
- Improving communication and sharing information effectively
- Making Camden more inclusive through accessible activities and disability-friendly spaces
- Offering training, support groups, and early interventions
2. Support Children and Young People to Thrive
The strategy focuses on helping young people succeed in education, health, and social life by:
- Supporting schools to collaborate and provide peer learning programmes
- Ensuring access to health support, therapies, and safe learning environments locally
- Providing activities and mental health resources to enhance wellbeing
3. Help Young Adults Build a Good Life
For young adults with SEND, Camden plans to:
- Provide guidance on post-school choices and career opportunities
- Partner with local employers to improve job prospects
- Support independence through life skills training, housing advice, and lifelong learning opportunities
Delivering the Strategy
Camden Council will ensure the strategy is co-produced and continuously improved by:
- Involving families and young people in decision-making
- Offering support early and consistently
- Sharing learning across education, health, and social care
- Providing training and professional development for SEND staff
Progress will be monitored by the SEND Improvement Board, which includes parent carers and key partners from social care, health, and education, to ensure the strategy makes a real difference.
